History of Mido Watches

Talk of vintage watches and one name that springs to the mind immediately is Mido.........Mido continues as a strong favorite among the watch collectors of the world today. Mido has been a name to reckon with throughout its history of over 80 years, with watches that are meant for watch connoisseurs and discerning users. It specializes in mid price range watches that offer something special and out of the ordinary. Mido prides itself with making timeless watches.Mido’s history goes back almost 90 years to 1918, when the company was born. Mido was started on November 11, 1918 by George G. Schaeren in Biel, Switzerland. Mido is a Latin term that means measuring. Since its very inception, Mido has been in the forefront of technical innovation and timeless designs.The next several decades that followed the birth of the company, saw Mido advancing both technologically and aesthetically. While path breaking innovations such as the first automatic watch, the first watch with unbreakable springs, the first center chronograph, the world’s most powerful winding mechanism, and the world’s smallest ladies’ watch hall marked the technological advances, Mido’s collaboration with luxury brands threw up unique and attractive designs like the Mido Bugatti.In 1934, Mido introduced the Multifort model, the first watch in the market to have a self-winding movement. The introduction of this automatic watch for the first time in the market was a major milestone in the history of Mido. The watch was also shock resistant, anti magnetic and water resistant – all firsts at that time. Mido reached yet another milestone in the same year when it introduced watches with unbreakable springs. This was also the first time that any company had introduced such springs in the market.Mido was the first to introduce center chronograph (a watch with all hands arranged in the center) in the year 1945. In 1954 the company introduced the world’s most powerful winding mechanism. In 1967 Mido was recognized as the maker of the world’s smallest ladies’ watch.With so many firsts to its credit and a history of innovations, it was small wonder that Mido was in the forefront for a number of decades. Mido’s first automatic, anti-magnetic and water resistant watch remained in the forefront for over three decades right through to the sixties. Another model, the Mido Robot was a symbol of robustness in the fifties. So much so that a famous comic strip of the period was dedicated to the Mido Robot and its adventures.Mido introduced its commander model in 1959. This was a single shell watch, the first of its kind and a novelty at the time. The single shell case revolutionized the industry, and improved the life span of watches significantly. Mido commander has survived to this day, and is among the most highly recognized watches with several individual models. Among the models featured under this range is an 18 karat gold model. The range also includes chronographs and COSC certified chronometers.In 1970 Mido introduced the Aquadura Crown Sealing system, an innovation that earned a place for it as the king of waterproof watches. The Aquadura crown sealing system uses a natural cork that is treated and shaped to ensure the water resistant characteristics. This is used to seal the crown, which is the part that is most prone to, and affected by, water leakage.In the nineties, the Mido World Timer was introduced. This was a functional watch that could show the local time at any part of the world. The user had to just bring the concerned city to the 12 o’clock position and press the crown to see the local time in that city.Mido is today a part of the Swatch group, which is a vibrant organization with over 150 production centers all over the world. Most of the production centers are in Switzerland, with the rest spread over countries like France, Italy, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia and China. Swatch group also owns brands such as Omega, Longines, Rado, and many more.

THE MAN BEHIND THE BRAND: Daniel JeanRichard

(This is the first of a series of articles on historical watchmakers whose names have been revived as contemporary watch brands.)
In 1986, Luigi (Gino) Macaluso, a Swiss watch distributor in Italy, bought the rights to the name Daniel JeanRichard from Lemania, the Swiss movement manufacturer. Daniel JeanRichard was not a watch brand. It is the name of a 17th century Swiss watchmaker, who was an extremely important, if obscure, figure in the development of the Swiss watch industry.
Macaluso at the time was contemplating a shift from being a Swiss watch brand distributor to a brand owner. The DJR name might come in handy one day, he thought.
Six years later, Macaluso made his move, acquiring the Girard-Perregaux firm. He moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, where GP has been based since its founding in 1845, and proceeded to revive one of the industry’s premier marques.

Later in the 1990s, when he had put GP on a solid footing, he launched Daniel JeanRichard (later shortened simply to JeanRichard) as a small sister brand to Girard-Perregaux in the Sowind Group, Macaluso’s holding company.
So who is Daniel JeanRichard and why did Gino Macaluso take an interest in him? “I was fascinated by the fact that Daniel JeanRichard lived at the beginning of the Swiss watchmaking industry,” Macaluso told WatchTime. “He is important. He is part of the roots of the watchmaking industry.”
Daniel JeanRichard was born in 1672 in Bressels, near La Sagne, in the Jura Mountains in what is now the Swiss canton (equivalent to a state) of Neuchâtel. According to the JeanRichard legend, around 1690, an English horse trader, while passing through the area, left his watch for repair with the teenaged JeanRichard, who was some sort of craftsman. (Some speculate he was a locksmith. Kathleen Pritchard, in her two-volume Swiss Timepiece Makers 1775-1975 says he was “probably” a goldsmith. No one knows for sure.) The young man took the watch apart and made drawings of the parts. The horse trader picked up the watch on his return trip. Based on his drawings, JeanRichard proceeded to teach himself and his fellow Jura craftsmen and farmers how to make watch parts. In this way he introduced watchmaking to the Jura.

Historians caution us to take the story of the horse trader with a grain of salt: a similar tale is told in France and Germany. If history is uncertain whether JeanRichard was one of the watch industry’s earliest knock-off artists, it is sure that in 1691 at the age of 19, he opened a watch workshop near Le Locle and proceeded to revolutionize the watch industry.
What he did was defy the power of the watchmakers’ guilds that controlled the industry in and around Geneva. As the guilds developed they became increasingly exclusive, the preserves of master watchmakers, whose guild rules protected their power and restrained competition. The masters refused to mechanize their production and forbade the use of tools which would permit mass production of watches. They kept the number of apprentices to a minimum and paid their workers, bound to them by cast-iron contracts, poorly. The guild system was designed to keep watch production low, watch quality high, and watch prices exorbitant.
JeanRichard scorned the guild system. He introduced division of labor to the industry, a system known as établissage. JeanRichard taught the local peasant farmers to make watch components, each specializing in producing certain parts, with final assembly by master watchmakers. Instead of restricting the secrets of watch production, he spread them throughout the Neuchâtel Jura. He also pushed mechanized watchmaking, working with local toolmakers to create horological tools to increase production so that watches could be more affordable. The Jura farmers turned quickly to watchmaking, which provided welcome income during the long, slow winters. In this way, JeanRichard paved the way for Swiss industrial watch production.
The new system, which was an early form of subcontracting, spread rapidly throughout the region and gave birth to more than a hundred new specialist professions – chain smiths, axle makers, hinge makers, escapement adjusters, makers of pinions, gongs, keys and other assorted watch parts – most of which have survived to this day. By the time of JeanRichard’s death in 1741, there were several hundred watchmakers in the mountain towns of Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds and the surrounding villages. Later, watchmakers from the now famous Vallée de Joux learned the trade in the Neuchâtel Jura and adopted JeanRichard’s établissage system.
The seed JeanRichard sowed bore fruit. The next generation of Jura watchmakers produced geniuses like Abraham-Louis Perrelet, inventor of the self-winding watch, and Abraham-Louis Breguet, who contributed mightily to the making of the modern watch.
Jean Richard married a Le Locle woman and opened a watchmaking business in Les Petits Monts above the town in 1705. He was known for making plain watches that an average person could afford. A few of his watches have survived; two are on display in Le Locle’s Watch Museum. JeanRichard had five sons, all of whom became watchmakers.

Le Locle still remembers its hero. In the center of the town, in front of the post office, stands a statue of young JeanRichard, apron askew, examining a watch. Macaluso, too, has done his part to keep the name alive. In addition to the JeanRichard SA subsidiary in La Chaux-de-Fonds, he has created the JeanRichard Museum of Tools in the city in a restored villa called Villa JeanRichard. The museum traces the evolution of watchmaking tools in the 300 years since young Daniel introduced watchmaking to the Jura.

Talk of vintage watches and one name that springs to the mind immediately is Mido. Mido continues as a strong favorite among the watch collectors of the world today. Mido has been a name to reckon with throughout its history of over 80 years, with watches that are meant for watch connoisseurs and discerning users. It specializes in mid price range watches that offer something special and out of the ordinary. Mido prides itself with making timeless watches. Mido’s history goes back almost 90 years to 1918, when the company was born. Mido was started on November 11, 1918 by George G. Schaeren in Biel, Switzerland. Mido is a Latin term that means measuring. Since its very inception, Mido has been in the forefront of technical innovation and timeless designs.
The next several decades that followed the birth of the company, saw Mido advancing both technologically and aesthetically. While path breaking innovations such as the first automatic watch, the first watch with unbreakable springs, the first center chronograph, the world’s most powerful winding mechanism, and the world’s smallest ladies’ watch hall marked the technological advances, Mido’s collaboration with luxury brands threw up unique and attractive designs like the Mido Bugatti.
In 1934, Mido introduced the Multifort model, the first watch in the market to have a self-winding movement. The introduction of this automatic watch for the first time in the market was a major milestone in the history of Mido. The watch was also shock resistant, anti magnetic and water resistant – all firsts at that time. Mido reached yet another milestone in the same year when it introduced watches with unbreakable springs. This was also the first time that any company had introduced such springs in the market.
Mido was the first to introduce center chronograph (a watch with all hands arranged in the center) in the year 1945. In 1954 the company introduced the world’s most powerful winding mechanism. In 1967 Mido was recognized as the maker of the world’s smallest ladies’ watch.
With so many firsts to its credit and a history of innovations, it was small wonder that Mido was in the forefront for a number of decades. Mido’s first automatic, anti-magnetic and water resistant watch remained in the forefront for over three decades right through to the sixties. Another model, the Mido Robot was a symbol of robustness in the fifties. So much so that a famous comic strip of the period was dedicated to the Mido Robot and its adventures.
Mido introduced its commander model in 1959. This was a single shell watch, the first of its kind and a novelty at the time. The single shell case revolutionized the industry, and improved the life span of watches significantly. Mido commander has survived to this day, and is among the most highly recognized watches with several individual models. Among the models featured under this range is an 18 karat gold model. The range also includes chronographs and COSC certified chronometers.
In 1970 Mido introduced the Aquadura Crown Sealing system, an innovation that earned a place for it as the king of waterproof watches. The Aquadura crown sealing system uses a natural cork that is treated and shaped to ensure the water resistant characteristics. This is used to seal the crown, which is the part that is most prone to, and affected by, water leakage.
In the nineties, the Mido World Timer was introduced. This was a functional watch that could show the local time at any part of the world. The user had to just bring the concerned city to the 12 o’clock position and press the crown to see the local time in that city.
Mido is today a part of the Swatch group, which is a vibrant organization with over 150 production centers all over the world. Most of the production centers are in Switzerland, with the rest spread over countries like France, Italy, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia and China. 1875 Joseph Bulova, a 23-year-old immigrant from Bohemia, opens a small jewelry shop on Maiden Lane in New York City.

1911 Bulova begins manufacturing and selling boudoir and table clocks as well as fine pocket watches. These pieces are sold in unprecedented numbers.

1912 Bulova sets up its first plant dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements in Bienne, Switzerland.

1919 During World War I, the convenience of wristwatches (as opposed to pocket watches) is discovered. In 1919 Bulova introduces the first full line of men's jeweled wristwatches.

1920 Bulova Watch Company, Inc. moves to 580 Fifth Avenue and builds the Bulova Observatory on top of the building for the taking of sidereal time. This is the first Observatory ever built atop a skyscraper. The Observatory is under the direction of a mathematician whose readings are electrically recorded, instantaneously, on a chronograph hundreds of feet below the observatory, guiding the Bulova watchmakers in the Setting and Timing unit of the Company.

1923 The name Bulova Watch Company, Inc. is adopted. Bulova perfects a new concept in the watch industry with total standardization of parts. Every part of a Bulova watch is made with such precision (standardized to the ten thousandth part of an inch) that it is interchangeable with the same part in any other Bulova watch. This revolutionizes the servicing of watches.

1924 Bulova unveils the first full line of ladies' watches, including diamond-accented pieces. In the same year, President Calvin Coolidge presents a Bulova watch to Stanley "Bucky" Harris player-manager of the World Series-winning Washington Senators. Bulova designs a new watch in honor of the occasion and names it the "President."

1926 Bulova produces the nation's first radio commercial, "At the tone, it's 8 P.M., B-U-L-O-V-A, Bulova watch time."

1926 ArdÃ© Bulova, Joseph’s son, offers a prize of $1,000 to the pilot who first succeeds in a nonstop flight across the Atlantic.

1927 In honor of Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic solo flight from New York to Paris, Bulova ships 5,000 Lone Eagle watches, packaged with pictures of Lindbergh. The supply, which is available the day after the landing, is sold out within three days. During the next few years Bulova sells nearly 50,000 of these commemorative watches. Also in 1927, Bulova Watch Company goes public on the American Stock Exchange, and Bulova Canada is established.

1928 Bulova introduces the world's first clock radio.

1929 Bulova engineers and patents a new principle in the construction of automobile clocks.

1931 Bulova begins manufacturing the first electric clocks. The collection includes wall and mantel clocks, and clocks for use in stores, windows, office buildings, train stations and airports. Also, Bulova becomes the first watch manufacturer to spend more than $1 million a year on advertising. Throughout the Depression years, Bulova supports retailers by offering Bulova watches to buyers on time-payment plans.

1932 Bulova runs a "Name the Watch" contest for its new $24.75 timepiece, with cash prizes totaling $10,000. The top prize of $1,000 would be equivalent to about $12,500 in the year 2000.

1935 Joseph Bulova, founder of Bulova Watch Company, dies.

1940 Bulova is a sponsor for all of the top 20 radio shows, including Charley McCarthy, Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly and Major Bowes Amateur Hour.

1941 Continuing its tradition of advertising firsts, Bulova airs the first television commercial: a simple picture of a clock and a map of the United States, with a voice-over proclaiming, "America runs on Bulova time." The 20-second spot costs $9. 1941 also marks the year that the Bulova Board of Directors, chaired by Joseph’s son, Ardé Bulova, adopts a resolution to sell products for national defense at actual cost. Throughout World War II, having perfected the skill of creating precision timepieces, Bulova works with the U.S. government to produce military watches, specialized timepieces, aircraft instruments, critical torpedo mechanisms and fuses.

1944 25% of all radio advertising was used to promote the sale of War Bonds and Stamps: “B-U-L-O-V-…Bulova Watch Time…Time to Buy United States War Bonds and Stamps.”

1945 The Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking opens its doors to help disabled veterans learn watchmaking skills. Entirely supported by the Bulova Foundation, the school is equipped with state-of-the-art accessibility features, including automatic doors and extra-wide elevators. Graduates of the school are assured employment with over 1,500 positions pledged by American Jewelers.

1948 Bulova begins developing the Phototimer, a unique combination of photo-finish camera and precision electronic timing instrument.

1952 Bulova begins developing Accutron, the first breakthrough in timekeeping technology in over 300 years. Accutron, the first fully electronic watch, promises to keep time to within 2 seconds a day.

1953 Recognizing new trends in the watch industry, Bulova adds more self-winding and shock-proof watches to its line. Also added this year is the Bulova Wrist-Alarm, an entirely new kind of watch.

1954 Bulova introduces the Bulova 23, a self-winding, waterproof, 23-jewel watch with an unbreakable mainspring, made entirely in the United States. Omar Bradley, World War II general and retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, joins Bulova as Chairman of the Board of the Bulova Research and Development Laboratories.

1955 An independent A.C. Neilson Company survey reveals that Americans see more national advertising for Bulova products than for any other products, in any other industry, in the world.

1956 Bulova completes negotiations to cosponsor the “Jackie Gleason Show" a one-hour live television show airing Saturday nights from eight to nine o'clock. This is the first time in history that any watch or jewelry-related company has made a sponsorship commitment of such magnitude.

1958 Omar N. Bradley becomes chairman of the Bulova Watch Company, a position he remains in until 1973, when he retires at the age of 80.

1959 Bulova offers an unprecedented 1-year warranty on all of its clock radios.

1960 NASA asks Bulova to incorporate Accutron into its computers for the space program. Bulova timing mechanisms eventually become an integral part of 46 missions of the U.S. Space Program. Also in 1960, Bulova reintroduces its redeveloped Phototimer clock for track and field, improved with updated photographic and electronic technologies. It features an infrared sensing element patterned after those used on heat-seeking missiles. Mounted on the starter's pistol, the Phototimer senses the flash of the gun and starts a timer clock at the same instant that the runners leave their marks.

October 25, 1960 Accutron, the first watch to keep time through electronics, is introduced. It is the most spectacular breakthrough in timekeeping since the invention of the wristwatch. This revolutionary timekeeping concept of a watch without springs or escapement is operated by an electronically activated tuning fork. The Accutron watch goes on to become a presidential gift to world leaders and other dignitaries. President Johnson declares it the White House's official Gift of State.

1962 The Accutron Tuning-fork watch becomes the first wristwatch certified for use by railroad personnel. 1962 is also the year that Bulova introduces its Caravelle line of jeweled watches. Designed to retail at $10.95 to $29.95, Caravelle competes with non-jeweled watches in the same price range.

1966 Bulova runs national commercials for Accutron on many popular television shows including the Dean Martin Show and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

1967 Accutron clocks are the only clocks aboard Air Force One.

1968 The Bulova Satellite Clock, the world's first public clock regulated by time signals from orbiting satellites, is inaugurated by Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, President of Mexico. The clock is installed atop the Torre Latino Americana, Mexico's tallest skyscraper. 1968 also marks the year that Caravelle becomes the largest selling jeweled-movement watch in the United States.

1969 An Accutron watch movement is part of the equipment placed on the moon by Apollo 11 astronauts, the first men on the moon. A Bulova timer is placed in the moon's Sea of Tranquility to control the transmissions of vital data through the years.

1969 Bulova introduces the Accuquartz, the first quartz-based clock.

1970 The Bulova Accuquartz men's calendar wristwatch becomes the first quartz-crystal watch sold at retail in the United States. Made of 18-karat gold, it retails for $1,325.

1973 Three specially designed Accutron portable alarm clocks are placed on board NASA's Skylab, the world's first space laboratory, launched from Cape Kennedy. Also this year, Bulova wins the world's first design competition for solid-state digital watches at the Prix de la Ville de Genève watch-styling competition, the world's most prestigious international watch-styling competition. Bulova also wins two of the three honorable mentions awarded at the competition.

1976 Bulova introduces its line of Accutron Quartz movement watches for men. Also this year, the Smithsonian Institution's newly opened National Air and Space Museum features a replica of the NASA Skylab. It includes an Accutron "space alarm" clock identical to the ones mounted onboard the actual Skylab.

1977 Bulova introduces its line of Accutron Quartz movement watches for women.

TAG HUEUR profesional 200 meters.Heuer diambil dari nama pendirinya yaitu Edouard Heuer yang mulai merintis membuat jam pada umur 20 tahun. Ia memulai bisnisnya di tahun 1860, tetapi kemudian ia meninggal dunia pada tahun 1892. Apa yang dirintisnya kemudian dilanjutkan oleh kedua anaknya yaitu Jules dan Charles Heuer. Usaha ini kemudian berkembang dan terus maju sehingga merk Heuer diakui sebagai salah satu merk arloji terkemuka. Pada tahun 1964, perusahaan Heuer bergabung dengan Leonidas sehingga menjadi Heuer-Leonidas. Pada tahun 1985 diakuisisi oleh Techniques d'Avant-Garde (TAG) sehingga menjadi TAG Heuer yang kita kenal sekarang.

Pada tahun 70-an dimana eforia terjadi berkaitan dengan pencapaian manusia ke bulan melanda di banyak bidang. Salah satu yang terkait dengan hal itu adalah desain-desain jam yang diproduksi pada masa-masa itu. Era yang sering disebut sebagai Space-age itu menghasilkan desain-desain jam yang unik dan menarik.

Salah satunya adalah jam yang dikeluarkan oleh Fortis ini. Mereka menyebut tipe jam ini sebagai Spaceleader, walaupun saat itu Fortis belum menjadi jam resmi program ruang angkasa seperti saat ini. Namun semangat untuk menunjukkan era Space-age sangat terlihat dari desainnya.

Casing berbentuk lucu karena antara oval dan bulat dengan finishing kombinasi brushed dan polished gold plated. Tulisan fortis beserta lambangnya timbul dan ada tulisan hifi-matic M, yang sampai sekarang saya masih tidak tahu apa maksudnya. Jam ini sudah dilengkapi dengan hari dan tanggal. Kondisi nyaris seperti baru, bahkan di belakang jam ini masih tertempel lapisan pelindung yang biasa digunakan untuk jam-jam baru.
